Sudha Varghese, born in Kerala, was shaken by the regressive condition of women in Bihar and hence, moved there after completing her studies with the aim to improve their lives. She established an initiative called ‘Nari Gunjan’ in 1987, through which she worked for the Musahar Tribal Women, the most marginalized community of Bihar. Presently, there are around 3000 children studying there and most of them are girls. Sudha has been associated with ‘SEWA’ and trained the women of the community to earn a livelihood by becoming small scale farmers. Under another initiative undertaken by Sudha in association with Nari Gunjan, she helped to launch the Dalit Women Band where ten women from the community were taught drumming so as to be able to earn as professional drummers. Sudha faced several struggles and threats for working towards the women’s rights and entitlement. This experience has made her life a lot more meaningful and rich than she could ever imagine.
