While Afsal was doing his fellowship with Reaching Sky Foundation the concept of Bottles Up came up & was the turning point for the. Bottles Up aims at creating awareness on “single use” bottle consumption & provides steel water bottles to the underprivileged children. A pilot project was completed at Vellimon UP School of Perinad Gramapanchayat by distributing 33 Steel Bottle. The concept was quite new to Kerala, but got support from a Minister of Kerala who inaugurated the first campaign. Afsal brought his volunteering to his academics by developing a low cost Plastic Shredding Machine for the Panchayat to reduce plastic bottles as part of his final year engineering project.
A huge impact of his project was over 100+ youth groups were formed,1000+ steel water bottles where distributed, transforming 10+ Schools to Plastic Bottle Free School.
Afsal also has worked with Perinad Primary Health Center where he and his friends started Palliative Saturday; where two volunteers could accompany the Palliative Care Team on Saturdays and assist them where-ever possible and later it was applicable for the whole week. They have also kick-started an initiative called Students In Palliative, 250+ volunteers where given Palliative Care training to act in case of crisis,the first of its kind in
